Center for Laboratory Animal Medicine & Care (CLAMC)

The Center for Laboratory Animal Medicine and Care (CLAMC) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston is responsible for the health and well being of laboratory animals used for the institution's biomedical research programs. CLAMC works in tandem with the institutional Animal Welfare Committee, and it meets all standards mandated by the Animal Welfare Act, Center for Disease Control, National Research Council Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care - International, and the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

CLAMC provides professional veterinary, surgical and animal care services, and its staff includes five veterinarians, seven veterinary technicians, and over thirty animal care and support personnel. On staff are veterinary diplomats of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, Texas Registered Veterinary Technicians, Certified Managers of Animal Resources, Texas Registered Laboratory Animal Technologists, Laboratory Animal Technicians, and Assistant Laboratory Animal Technicians.  CLAMC also coordinates and provides training on the care and use of animals for UTH faculty, staff and trainees.

Clinical veterinarians are on site seven days a week and on-call outside of those times to address any animal health concerns.  Animals are assessed daily for health or husbandry concerns by the trained animal care staff and examined twice weekly by the veterinary staff or more often due to the type of study and/or the condition of the animal. If animals exhibit any indication of clinical disease or distress, the veterinary staff confers with laboratory personnel to recommend appropriate interventions.

CLAMC facilities accommodate a variety of species and activities. The animal resources occupy 78,000 square feet primarily in six resources, and include housing (with rodent barrier and BSL II and III facilities), cage washing, and large animal and rodent surgical and clinical support resources (treatment, radiology, clinical pathology).
