Joe Love is UTHealth’s newest faculty member. His official title is “Air Force Liaison to the University of Texas”. His goal is to establish a foothold for military medicine that will allow personnel to maintain their professional skills at a level appropriate for deployment anywhere in the world. This requires a hospital with a large, diverse volume of patients and UT-Houston fits the bill.
Growing up in Fairbanks, Alaska, this former college hockey player was given the pledge name of “Nanook” by his fraternity while at the University of Colorado in Boulder. His first job out of school involved selling laboratory equipment in northern Minnesota, where he met his wife. He later took a job working for Representative Don Young in Washington DC and pursued a master’s degree in biology from Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Then came medical school. “My father had been in the Department of Defense and advised me to join the service to pay for school.” He did and later graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is presently a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force and proud of his service.
He and his wife have six children. In his spare time, he still plays hockey in a “beer league” and chases his kids.
Of UT, he says, “The sky’s the limit. If you can dream about it, it can be accomplished here easily.”
