Premiere issue of UTHealth Magazine
People learn about The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) in many ways. They may be treated by one of our clinical faculty, read about research we are doing, hear about us on the news, attend an outreach program in the community – or be a friend or relative of someone who works or studies here. There is a lot to know about UTHealth, so here is an overview of who we are.
To start with, we are a large institution, with more than seven-thousand people here in a variety of roles – clinicians, researchers, students, staff, administrators and educators.
We are comprised of six schools – the Dental Branch, the Graduate School of Biomedical
Sciences, the Medical School, the School of Health Information Sciences, the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health. Having all of these schools within one institution enables us to tackle complex health challenges from many perspectives. It also fosters natural collaboration, something that sets us apart from many of our peers.
You will find UTHealth in five other locations in Texas through the regional campuses of our School of Public Health.
We are now in our fourth decade as an institution, although some of our components have an even longer history. The Dental Branch, for example, was established more than 100 years ago. We have three clinical practices, including one of the largest in the Gulf Coast region.
And now we have two names – one is formal. We use it on official documents, like diplomas – The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. And we have our new, shorter dba name, UTHealth.
But we have just one vision – together we are creating the best hope for a healthier future.
UTHealth Magazine was created to share that vision in a highly accessible style that informs readers, influences decision-makers and inspires contributors. We hope you will enjoy the comprehensive stories, easy-to-read summaries and statistics contained in each issue.
