Children’s Learning Institute

The children we nurture today will grow into the leaders who will guide our nation and world tomorrow. At the Children’s Learning Institute at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, we work passionately to ensure they reach their full potential.

Man and child clapping

The Children’s Learning Institute is the preeminent source for effective, evidence-based learning solutions. Each day, we seek to advance learning and health outcomes through public and private partnerships across the state and the nation in research, resource development, clinical services, and program delivery.

For over 30 years, experts at the Children’s Learning Institute have met the educational needs of children in Texas, providing children from at-risk populations with the support they need to succeed academically and ensuring children in communities throughout the state have opportunities to learn and excel.

Our research and programs are supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Education, and the Institute of Education Sciences. This research goes into the community through our partnerships with the Texas Education Agency, Texas colleges and universities, school leaders, Texas legislators, childcare providers, and child advocacy groups—as well as through our own clinics. No similar or comparable center exists in Houston or the state of Texas.

Within and outside the walls of the Children’s Learning Institute, our scholars and specialists work tirelessly to create quality learning environments for all children—especially those at risk and most in need.

The Children’s Learning Institute will continue leading Texas in child development and education with your support for Many Faces. One Mission. Together, we can pave the way for even brighter futures for the next generation.

  • Impact by the Numbers

    • Since its inception, Texas School Ready has expanded its reach from 2,100 children in 11 Texas communities to 240,000 children in 1,000 communities.
    • Through the Dan L Duncan Reading Initiative, the Children’s Learning Institute has provided over 32,000 tutoring sessions.
    • Since 2008, the Dan L Duncan Neurodevelopmental Clinic Scholarship Fund has provided $167,000 worth of free services to 420 children

  • Learning Programs

Our experts give young minds a jump start on lifelong learning as they support children from at-risk communities and enhance child development as a whole. Among our most successful programs is Texas School Ready, a comprehensive preschool teacher training program that provides resources to help teachers meet the specific needs of children and better prepare these young scholars for kindergarten and beyond.

Professionals at the Children's Learning Institute have also developed, implemented, and supported an array of resources—such as activity collections, assessments, and developmental guidelines—for parents, teachers, mentors, and private childcare centers. Many of these resources are available for free or low-cost to a variety of early learning programs through CLI Engage, our comprehensive e-learning platform. Thanks to these materials, children have heightened opportunities to grow and reach their full potential.

  • Patient Care

Experts at our clinics are leaders in clinical diagnosis, treatment, and interventions for learning and developmental differences and neurological conditions, and they provide a safe place for children of all abilities and backgrounds to grow and learn. Specialists at the Dan L Duncan Children’s Neurodevelopmental Clinic provide comprehensive assessments for individuals thought to have developmental or behavioral problems, autism spectrum disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and learning disabilities.
