Texas Medical Center is Hiring: Red, White & You
Veterans career fair set for April 24, 2014
As part of an initiative to hire more veterans, the Texas Medical Center (TMC) and its member institutions will host a job fair for veterans and spouses of deceased veterans on Thursday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hornberger Conference Center, 2151 W. Holcombe Blvd.
TMC employers are seeking qualified candidates for careers in a variety of fields including administrative support, allied health, education, maintenance, finance, food service, information technology, laboratory technology, nursing, research, security, logistics and transportation.
Representatives from close to a dozen institutions will accept resumes and applications and conduct interviews at the hiring event.
“Members of the Texas Medical Center have acknowledged the challenges facing our veterans and have come together to offer these qualified applicants job opportunities,” said Willie French, committee chair of the TMC’s “Hiring Red, White & You!” program and director of talent acquisition and recruitment strategies at Houston Methodist. “Every American owes an immeasurable debt of gratitude to our veterans and their families. We hope that we can begin to repay this debt through our veterans hiring program.”
There are more than 100,000 employees at the hospitals, clinics, universities and research centers that constitute the Texas Medical Center. And at any given time, there are hundreds of job openings for qualified individuals who would like to make a difference in their community by considering a career in health care.
John Holcomb, M.D., a retired Army colonel and co-founder of the TMC’s “Hiring Red, White & You!” initiative, said employers in the Texas Medical Center recognize that the training and skills of military veterans translate in the health care setting.
“Our service members who fight to protect our freedoms abroad shouldn’t have to fight for jobs when they return home,” said Holcomb, a trauma surgeon at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School and the Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute.
The TMC-wide veterans hiring initiative was launched in 2012 and already member institutions have worked in earnest to hire more than 1,000 veterans.
