Annual Preventative Cardiology Forum held Feb. 2, 2013

HOUSTON – (Nov. 28, 2012) – “Pathways to Cardiovascular Disease Prevention” will be the theme of the 23rd annual Preventive Cardiology Forum of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

Nine experts in the field of cardiology will present the latest findings about risk factors; heart disease prevention in men, women and children; and clinical and public health approaches to hypertension prevention and control. The event, free and aimed at healthcare professionals, will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at the UTHealth Medical School, 6431 Fannin St.

Francisco Fuentes, M.D., program director and Theodore and Maureen O’Driscoll-Levy Professor, Cardiology, at the UTHealth Medical School, will lead a panel discussion.

UTHealth speakers will include L. Maximilian Buja, M.D., professor of pathology and laboratory medicine and executive director of the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library; Susan Laing, M.D., associate professor of medicine and director of the Echocardiography Laboratory; Stefano Sdringola, M.D., professor and Weatherhead Distinguished University Chair; and Timothy Bricker, M.D., professor and chief of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology. Also speaking is David Hyman, M.D., M.P.H., professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM).

Khannan Athreya, a UTHealth Medical School student, will give an update on the progress of the “Million Hearts” initiative, which was launched in September 2011 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services with partners such as the American Heart Association. Its message is centered on the “ABCS” of Aspirin for people at risk, Blood pressure control, Cholesterol management and Smoking cessation in an effort to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over the next five years.

In addition to UTHealth, the forum will be webcast at Memorial Health System of East Texas in Lufkin and The University of Texas School of Public Health Brownsville Regional Campus, which is part of UTHealth.
