Texas Medical Center to recognize newly hired military veterans
HOUSTON – (Nov. 7, 2013) – On behalf of the Texas Medical Center (TMC) and its Hiring Red, White & You! initiative, Texas Children’s Hospital will host a breakfast honoring military veterans who have joined the TMC workforce during the past year. In recognition of their service to our country and community, these courageous veterans will receive challenge coins from leaders of participating hospitals and universities. Many veterans who are now employed at TMC institutions are expected to attend.
The event is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, 6651 Main St. The breakfast and challenge coin ceremony will be in the South Tower’s Conference Center on the fourth floor.
The program will include brief remarks from Mark A. Wallace, president and CEO of Texas Children’s Hospital; James H. “Red” Duke, Jr., M.D., a Korean War veteran, founder of the veterans’ hiring initiative and trauma surgeon at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) and the Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute; and Patricia Mitchell, a retired TMC executive who co-founded Hiring Red, White & You! with Duke and retired Army Col. John H. Holcomb, M.D. Members of the Hiring Red, White & You! steering committee also will take part in the ceremony.
TMC leaders, steering committee members and military veterans who are now employed as a result of TMC’s veterans hiring initiative will be available for interviews before, during and after the breakfast. Complimentary valet parking is available to journalists who call in advance.
