HOUSTON - (August 23, 2011) – Deanna Hoelscher, Ph.D., R.D., director of the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), has been named president-elect of the International Society for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity (ISBNPA).
“My overall goals are to increase the communications and networking capabilities of the organization through social media and the web, and to ensure the financial viability of the society,” said Hoelscher who also holds the John P. McGovern Professorship in Health Promotion at The University of Texas School of Public Health Austin Regional Campus, part of UTHealth. She will begin her one-year term in May 2012.
ISBNPA’s mission is to stimulate, promote and advocate innovative research and policy in the area of behavioral nutrition and physical activity toward the improvement of human health worldwide. The organization promotes and facilitates information on behavioral issues related to nutrition and physical activity to the public, educators, scholars and health professionals. ISBNPA has nearly 400 members representing 29 countries. Members are from more than 150 academic and medical institutions, as well as more than 40 government agencies, industry and professional organizations.
Hoelscher’s research interests include child and adolescent nutrition, school-based health promotion programs, evaluation of child obesity policies and dissemination of school health programs. She has been the principal investigator on research projects examining child and adolescent populations, most notably the Coordinated Approach to Childhood Health (CATCH), a study to decrease cardiovascular risk factors in children.
The Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living was established to conduct research to better understand and influence behaviors and environmental conditions that affect healthy living, with a vision of “healthy children in a healthy world.” The Center was founded in 2006 with a grant from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and is housed at The University of Texas School of Public Health Austin Regional Campus, part of UTHealth.
