AUSTIN, Texas – (April 1, 2013) – SUBWAY® restaurants spokesperson and philanthropist Jared Fogle will join with educators and Texas legislators on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 for an event at the Texas State Capitol to support healthy initiatives in schools. “Texas Supports Healthy Schools” is hosted by the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living, part of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), along with Dairy MAX, the Partnership for a Healthy Texas and ACTIVE Life.
The event aims to bring awareness to school policies and programs that promote student fitness and healthy eating. One such program is CATCH®, a school-based physical activity and nutrition program, which researchers at The University of Texas School of Public Health helped create.
Fogle will discuss his partnership with the CATCH® program, which is used in many Texas elementary and middle schools, and his personal struggle with obesity. He will also talk about how his struggles led him to create The Jared Foundation, which is dedicated to eliminating childhood obesity by raising awareness and developing programs that educate and inspire kids to live healthier lives.
School district administrators will discuss specific programs, practices and partnerships that have improved student fitness and academic success, including how Fuel Up to Play 60 supports nutrition and physical activity in schools through grant funding, tools and resources. The program is a partnership among the National Dairy Council, Dairy MAX and the NFL.
“Texas Supports Healthy Schools” will take place during Healthy Texas Week, an annual initiative of IT’S TIME TEXAS™ in which Texans are encouraged to move more, eat better and live well.
