UTHealth establishes Office of Diversity and Inclusion
HOUSTON – (April 29, 2013) – To affirm and ensure its commitment to diversity for students, faculty and staff, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School has created the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
“While diversity has always been a cornerstone of our medical school’s foundation, this new office will codify its place in our educational environment,” said Giuseppe Colasurdo, M.D., the school’s dean and president of UTHealth.
Colasurdo named LaTanya Love, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics, and Pedro Mancias, associate professor of pediatric neurology, as assistant deans for the new office. They also will have dual appointments in the Office of Admissions and Student Affairs.
“We recognize diversity as central to achieving institutional excellence and believe that it is critical for the accomplishment of the mission of the UTHealth Medical School,” said Love, who is assistant dean for admissions and student affairs.
Specific goals of the new office include increasing scholarships, improving recruitment and retention of minority faculty, enhancing the cultural competence curriculum and providing institutional support for diversity and inclusion.
“We will create a diversity plan and mission statement for the school and then work to put the plan into action items,” Mancias said.
