HOUSTON – (June 20, 2014) – John P. Breinholt, M.D., has been named the director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School.
“Dr. Breinholt will be a wonderful addition to the faculty, and a dynamic leader for the department,” said Eric Eichenwald, M.D., chair of the UTHealth Department of Pediatrics, who made the announcement. “I am looking forward to working with him to grow the cardiology and cardiac surgery programs.”
Breinholt will also be Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Breinholt graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. He received his pediatric cardiology training at Texas Children’s Hospital, where he also received additional training in cardiomyopathy and cardiac transplant. After completing an advanced fellowship in cardiac catheterization, also at Texas Children’s, he was recruited to Indiana University School of Medicine, where he was associate professor of pediatrics, director of the Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program and director of education for the Division of Pediatric Cardiology.
His clinical interests include interventional cardiac catheterization, non-surgical treatment for heart defects, cardiac transplantation, heart failure and hybrid surgical/catheter procedures.
Eichenwald said he was grateful to Syam Rao, M.D., for his leadership of the division during the search process. “Dr. Rao has done a wonderful job for the department and the medical school, and I deeply appreciate him stepping in as interim division chief,” he said.
