HOUSTON – (Dec. 20, 2013) – Harold W. “Bill” Kohl, Ph.D., professor of epidemiology with the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living at The University of Texas School of Public Health Austin Regional Campus, has been appointed chair of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN) Science Board for 2014.
Shellie Pfohl, executive director of the PCFSN, said Kohl was selected to serve as chair in recognition of the significant contributions he has made as a member of the Science Board since 2012.
PCFSN’s mission is to engage, educate and empower all Americans across the lifespan to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition. The Council plays a key role in the development of the administration’s program priorities, outreach and awareness efforts to improve the health and quality of life for all Americans.
“Science is a critical part of programs of the PCFSN, and the role of the Science Board is to align the Council’s efforts with the best science,” says Kohl.
As chair, Kohl will lead the board to advance the mission of the Council and align with evidence-based practices. The PCFSN staff and council members look to this board for recommendations in the areas of program development and evaluation.
“Dr. Kohl’s long-term leadership in physical activity and public health, including participation in three recent Institute of Medicine panels, textbooks, a new international journal and ongoing NIH-supported research, led to this prestigious appointment,” said Cheryl Perry, Ph.D., professor and regional dean of the UT School of Public Health Austin Regional Campus. “We are honored to have him as a senior faculty member in our center and school.”
Since 1984, Kohl has worked in the areas of physical activity and health, including conducting research, developing and evaluating intervention programs for adults and children, and developing and advising on policy issues. He is the founding president of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health as well as editor emeritus of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health.
