Following a national search, Richard Andrassy, MD, executive dean, ad interim, has named Anthony Estrera, MD, FACS, chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.

Holder of the Hazim J. Safi, MD, Distinguished Chair in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Estrera joined The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) in 2000 as assistant professor of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. He was promoted to associate professor in 2007 and professor in 2010. He has served as the department’s chair ad interim since 2019, when founding chair Hazim J. Safi, MD, stepped down from the position.

“I am pleased that the search committee found the best candidate here within our own McGovern Medical School,” Andrassy said. “Dr. Estrera has been a valuable member of our faculty and, as the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department chair, I am certain he will continue to grow and develop the department and this school through new endeavors.”

Estrera earned his medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed post-doctoral training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, DeBakey International Surgical Society, Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

The author or co-author of more than 60 book chapters and nearly 300 peer-reviewed articles, Estrera also has served on the editorial board of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal Aorta and Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

He is also the chief of cardiac surgery and director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and the Cardiovascular Intermediate Care Unit at the Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute, Texas Medical Center. He specializes in diseases of the aorta, specifically thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms and aortic dissection.
