Dr. Chukiwudi Ekwemalor presented at the April 2018 Programs to Increase Diversity (PRIDE) annual meeting in Maryland.

(July 31, 2018) – Chukwudi “Chudi” Ekwemalor, Ph.D., M.B.A., R.N., an assistant professor of clinical nursing in the Department of Family Health, has co-authored an article now available online in advance of publication:

Ezeobele, I.E., Ekwemalor, C.C., Ogunbor, A.  Depression and Perspectives of Nigerian Immigrant Men in the United States: An Applied Ethnographic Study. Journal of Transcultural Nursing. 2018 Jul 2.  DOI: 10.1177/1043659618781707

The study’s participants denied the existence of depression, which means that Nigerian immigrants may not be receiving adequate screening or treatment for depression, supporting the need for recognition of cultural differences in health care.  Researchers did not note gender differences in the individuals’ perceptions of depression.

Co-author Ifeoma Ezeobele, Ph.D., R.N., is a 1983 B.S.N. alumna of Cizik School of Nursing and currently a hospital nurse manager at the UTHealth Harris County Psychiatric Center (HCPC).

Ekwemalor is heading to New York University Langone Medical Center, Aug. 5-10, to participate in the Behavioral Medicine and Sleep Disorders Research PRIDE Summer Institute.

During PRIDE’s Sixth Annual Meeting, April 23-25, in Bethesda, Md., Ekwemalor imparted “Hypertension in African Americans and African immigrants in the United States: A systematic review” as a podium presentation.  With over 130 participants, organizers called the April event “a huge success.”
