Hanneman & Santa Maria present papers, Kang Memorial Workshop launched
Two present papers at State of the Science Congress, Kang Workshop introduced
(Oct. 31, 2018) – Two faculty members from Cizik School of Nursing presented papers at the 2018 State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research, sponsored by the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science, held September 13-15, in Washington, D.C.
Sandra K. Hanneman, Ph.D., R.N., the Jerold B. Katz Distinguished Professor for Nursing Research and Professor, Department of Research, presented “Inflammation and Delirium in Palliative Care Patients” in the Neuroscience Podium Session and “Light-at-Night and Salivary Interleukin (IL)-6 Levels” in the Methods Podium Session.
Interim Dean Diane Santa Maria, Dr.P.H., M.S.N., R.N., associate professor in the Department of Research, presented “Preliminary Efficacy of a Parent-Based Sexual Health RCT” in the Prevention of Health Risk Behaviors During Adolescence Symposium.
The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science also hosted six outstanding early-career nurse scientists who participated in the inaugural Duck-Hee Kang Memorial Mentored Workshop during the conference. The workshop for competitively chosen postdoctoral and new faculty researchers honors the late Duck-Hee Kang, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, who had been the Lee and Joseph D. Jamail Distinguished Professor at Cizik School of Nursing.
Kang, who died unexpectedly in 2016, was highly regarded as a biobehavioral nurse scientist and an outstanding research mentor of junior faculty.
“Dr. Kang was the quintessential mentor to students and early career faculty,” said Marti Rice, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing and immediate past chair of the Council. “This workshop honors her memory and provides an exceptional opportunity for mentoring in proposal development and review for the selected participants. She would have been so pleased.”
