Healthy Eating and Living Choices

Fun brown bag focusing on nutrition, exercise and making healthy choices. Presenters and handouts were provided with information, plus a demonstration and yummy sampling of smoothies, fruits, hummus and vegetable options in the Demonstration Kitchen. We also took a tour in the Community Garden near the School of Public Health and the School of Nursing. (See presentation here.)   

Presenters include:

  • The UT School of Public Health - Dietetic – Interns, Meaganne Lewellyn and Amanda Hostler, both MPH Candidates and Dietetic Interns, will be presenting an interactive class on produce for better health and will offer a unique hands-on style of nutrition education focusing on fruit and vegetables in all forms – fresh, frozen, 100% juice, canned, and dried.  The presenter will offer solutions to the confusion that shoppers often experience when trying to make healthy food choices. Some of the topics covered might include organic vs. conventional, what form of fruit or vegetable is best, phytochemicals, sodium content and other topics. The program is directed by Laura S. Moore, MEd, RDN, LD and Jeanne Piga-Plunkett, MS, RDN, LD, both UTHealth School of Public Health - Health Promotion Behavioral Science faculty.
  • Shannon Weston, MPH, RD, CDE, a nutritionist at UT Health Services is providing handouts. She is providing content on Nutrition and Wellness, plus some information on Diabetes self-management.
  • Health clubs are providing handouts. Clubs have been invited to provide information on their special programs or discounts which they offer to UTHealth employees.
  • Saultczy Bleu will give information on the “Plant It Forward Farms” and the UTHealth locations where they deliver.
