The research interests of Eric Boerwinkle, Ph.D., encompass the genetic analysis of common chronic diseases. Boerwinkle has authored more than 800 scientific publications in top tier journals and has led groundbreaking research on the connection between genes and health. He and his colleagues completed the world’s first genome-wide analyses for a variety of cardiovascular disease risk factors including hypertension and diabetes. These investigations have been a critical step in developing drugs that lower disease risk.

Steven Kelder, Ph.D., M.P.H., has more than 15 years experience in design and evaluation of child and adolescent research. He is one of the lead investigators of the CATCH project, a research-based program that guides elementary schools, families and children in being healthy, reaching more than a million Texas children and others in the United States and other countries.

Harold W. Kohl, III, Ph.D., is available to discuss the benefits of physical activity for adults and children, as well as community approaches for increasing physical activity. He is the chair of the President’s Council of Fitness, Sports & Nutrition Science Board. Kohl also led development of the 2008 U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines and was lead epidemiologist and team leader in the physical activity and health branch of the division of nutrition and physical activity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Joseph McCormick, M.D., is an infectious disease specialist and expert on viral hemorrhagic fevers, including Ebola, Lassa and Marburg. McCormick was involved in investigating the first-recorded Ebola outbreak in 1976. His experiences are chronicled in a book coauthored with his wife, Susan Fisher Hoch, M.D., titled “Level 4: Virus Hunters of the CDC.” He has intimate knowledge of West Africa and can provide his unique insights into the public health aspects of the current Ebola outbreak. He can also provide an interesting perspective on the designation of “emerging diseases.”

Kristina Mena, Ph.D., specializes in water quality, food safety and environmental science. She is one of a small group of researchers with expertise in microbial and chemical risk assessment.
