Texas Dental College is established

Texas Dental College becomes The University of Texas School of Dentistry

The dental school is renamed The University of Texas Dental Branch
1963
The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston is established by Texas Legislature
1968
Hermann Hospital (later Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center) becomes the primary teaching facility for the medical school
1969
The University of Texas Medical School at Houston is established
The School of Public Health is established
1971
The School of Public Health moves into its current building on the Houston campus, later named for its founding dean, Reuel A. Stallones, MD, MPH
1972
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston is established by The University of Texas System Board of Regents through consolidation of several other UT entities as 1 of 4 regional health science centers in Texas: Houston, Dallas, Galveston, San Antonio
The School of Nursing is established
John Victor Olson, DDS, MS, is named acting president of the university

Charles A. Berry, MD, is named president of the university

First Hermann Life Flight®
The nearly completed Medical School Building, connecting the John H. Freeman Building and Hermann Hospital, is devastated by flood

Truman G. Blocker, MD, is named acting president of the university

Roger J. Bulger, MD, is named president of the university
All phases of the medical school building are completed

MD/PhD Program at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is established
James “Red” Duke, Jr., MD, airs his first televised health program that would eventually evolve into a syndicated health segment for television

John C. Ribble, MD, is named president ad interim of the university

M. David Low, MD, PhD, is named president of the university
Genetic Counseling Program is founded at the graduate school by Jacqueline Hecht, MS, PhD. The program remained the only program of its kind in Texas until 2018

Affiliation between the medical school and Harris Health System is approved
Affiliation between the university and Harris County Psychiatric Center is approved
1991
UT Health Services is established, a primary care clinic in the Texas Medical Center managed by the nursing school

UT Physicians is created (as University Care Plus)

The University of Texas School of Allied Health Sciences (to later become the School of Biomedical Informatics) is reorganized to focus on health informatics

Dallas campus of the School of Public Health is founded

The graduate school moves into its current building, MD Anderson’s George and Cynthia Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building
The nursing school moves into its current building, which was awarded LEED® Gold Certification for its energy efficiency and sustainable design
The Hermann Professional Building is purchased and renamed The University of Texas Health Science Center Professional Building, becoming the flagship location for UT Physicians clinics

Hurricane Katrina - Health care teams from UTHealth Houston cared for thousands of hurricane evacuees at the George R. Brown Convention Center
The University of Texas Dental Branch celebrates 100th anniversary

National Institutes of Health awards funds to establish the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences
Funded by the then-largest fundraising campaign in university history and designed with energy-efficient innovations, the Fayez S. Sarofim Research Building is dedicated as the home of The Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases

The University of Texas School of Health Information Sciences is renamed UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics
UT Physicians opens its first community-based multispecialty clinic outside of the I-610 Loop in Missouri City, Texas

Giuseppe N. Colasurdo, MD, is named president ad interim of the university
The dental school is renamed UTHealth School of Dentistry

As part of the Medicaid 1115 waiver, UT Physicians begins building community clinics in underserved communities in the Greater Houston area
The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences celebrates 50th anniversary

Gift from the McGovern Foundation for the medical school, which is renamed John P. and Kathrine G. McGovern Medical School
2017
Hurricane Harvey: The university did not have significant damage; however, many members of the UTHealth Houston community were greatly impacted. This is the first time in the university’s history that a fund was established to assist students and employees who were impacted by the regional disaster.
The graduate school is renamed MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
