New UTHealth Houston academic psychiatric hospital opens next month in partnership with state

A new academic psychiatric hospital, part of the John S. Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center, will combine the most advanced patient care, research, and education when it opens next month at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) in partnership with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) and the Texas Medical Center.

Krista Patlovich organized “Papou’s 5K” on Dec. 11 to honor her beloved father Nick Georgas, who died in December 2020 from COVID-19-related complications. The event raised more than $10,000 for COVID-19 research at UTHealth Houston.

Transgender men face significant health and social disparities, including barriers to health care, research, and essential HIV-related conversations with their health care providers. That is why Paige Wermuth, PhD, MPH, assistant professor in the Department of Management, Policy, and Community Health, and graduate student Lou Weaver of The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth Houston) School of Public Health are launching a pilot project to examine and develop communication materials for trans men and their health care providers regarding HIV prevention.



Cizik School of Nursing students give back

On a recent early October morning, two students from Cizik School of Nursing at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) helped hand out food and nutrition education materials to families in an underserved neighborhood in the Westchase district of Houston.



UTHealth Houston welcomes 10 new Development Board members

Ten new members joined the ranks of the UTHealth Houston Development Board during the group’s meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 26. Under the leadership of Virginia L. (Ginni) Mithoff, Development Board chair, this group of more than 150 innovators and leaders from various fields comes together with a passion for the mission of UTHealth Houston. By drawing awareness to the university’s work and increasing philanthropic support, they champion the causes of health education, research, and patient care and help shape the future of the institution.
