Acculturative stress weighs heavy among the many factors that contribute to intimate partner violence (IPV) experienced by Latino immigrants, and nurses can help by working to break down barriers of inequity, according to the keynote address delivered by Rosa Gonzalez-Guarda, PhD, MPH, RN, at the second annual Carla Diaz-Lewis Domestic Violence Lecture at Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston.

UT Physicians, the clinical practice of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, is opened its first urgent care center on Aug. 8, in southeast Houston. The clinic will provide patients with a favorable alternative to an ER for immediate, non-life-threatening medical care.

Along with educating students, residents, and fellows in the most advanced lifesaving therapies on Earth, UTHealth Houston Department of Emergency Medicine is helping to prepare members of the Polaris Dawn crew to handle medical emergencies in space. The Department of Emergency Medicine, which has been training NASA astronauts in emergency medical care for more than 10 years, recently welcomed Polaris Dawn’s medical officer Anna Menon and mission specialist Sarah Gillis for a week-long space medicine training session.
