Campbell named chief operating officer of UT Physicians

Duncan Campbell, MBA, has been named chief operating officer of UT Physicians, the clinical practice of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, effective Nov. 2.

As chief operating officer, Campbell will serve as the business and operational leader of UT Physicians, working closely with physician leaders, department chairs, and administrative teams to strengthen operations across the practice and support the experience of patients, health care professionals, and employees.

Campbell brings more than 25 years of experience in health care operations and academic medicine, with leadership spanning physician enterprises, ambulatory operations, financial management, strategic growth, and payer strategy.

He joins UT Physicians from UC San Diego Health, where he has served in senior leadership roles since 2010, most recently as chief operating officer for Physician Network and Strategic Development. In that role, Campbell helped guide the growth and integration of a network of more than 3,100 physicians and oversaw areas including strategic growth, physician enterprise operations, value-based care, and payer strategy.

Campbell previously served as chief operating officer of UC San Diego Health Medical Group, overseeing operations for a faculty practice group of more than 1,400 members across more than 60 ambulatory sites. His responsibilities included financial services, revenue cycle operations, payer contracting, and ambulatory operations.

His career also includes leadership roles in Texas academic medicine. Campbell served as managing director of Texas Tech Physicians, overseeing the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine faculty practice plan, and as vice president of clinic financial services for Scott & White Healthcare.

Campbell earned a Bachelor of Business Administration, with majors in finance and economics, and a Master of Business Administration, with a concentration in health organization management, from Texas Tech University.

He joins UT Physicians as the practice continues work connected to UTHealth Houston’s Future in Focus strategic planning process and the Operational Excellence Transformation Initiative, efforts focused on strengthening the operational foundation of the university and its clinical enterprise.
