Dental school well-represented at 2025 AADOCR Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Second-year dental student Shawn Nguyen was named Outstanding Regional Representative in the Basic and Translational Science Category in the Student Competition for Advancing Dental Research and its Application.
UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry was well-represented in March at the 2025 Annual Meeting and Exhibition of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research.
Held March 12-15 in New York, faculty, students, and residents took part in in-person presentations, interactive talks, and symposiums. A full breakdown is available online.
Several students were recognized for individual awards.
SCADA
Second-year dental student Shawn Nguyen was named Outstanding Regional Representative in the Basic and Translational Science Category in the Student Competition for Advancing Dental Research and its Application, more commonly referred to as SCADA. His presentation was titled “TIME Differences in a Preclinical Model of HNSCC: Location Matters,” and Simon Young, DDS, MD, PhD, was his faculty mentor.
The purpose of the SCADA program is to advance the commitment to empower the next generation of dental leaders by showcasing students’ research and recognizing their passion for innovation and discovery.
Poster Presentations
Kay (Kuelye) Lee of the DDS Class of 2027 received the AADOCR Salivary Research Award in the pre-doctoral student category for her poster, “Microparticle Support Baths Enable Hydrogel Bioprinting for Salivary Tissue Engineering.” Her faculty mentor was Daniel Harrington, PhD.
Hatton Competition
Second-year dental student Kay (Kuelye) Lee received the received the AADOCR Salivary Research Award in the pre-doctoral student poster category.
Third-year dental student Amy Tran was one of 27 competitors selected to participate in the AADOCR Hatton Competition. She presented “Identification of Runx2+ stem cells in the mandibular condylar cartilage.”
The Hatton Competition is an oral presentation competition designed for junior investigators who exhibit potential for a productive career in dental research.
Joseph Lister Award for New Investigators
Research Scientist Thaise Geremias, DDS, PhD, was one of eight competitors selected to participate in the AADOCR/CADR Joseph Lister Award oral competition that recognizes new investigators in the field of dental, oral, and craniofacial research.
Exhibition Hall & Reception
Third-year dental student Amy Tran was one of 27 competitors selected to participate in the AADOCR Hatton Competition.
The School of Dentistry had a booth in the exhibition hall. The booth included information about the school and its research programs.
Additionally, the dental school held its annual reception March 13 inside the Javits Convention Center.
The conference marked AADOCR’s 54th Annual Meeting, which was held in conjunction with the 49th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research.
