Grants support next generation of emergency care

The Emergency and Trauma Care Education Partnership Program has awarded the Department of Emergency Medicine at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston with a pair of grants, supporting its efforts to strengthen the pipeline of physicians trained to provide critical emergency and trauma care across Texas.
Awarded for the 2026-28 cycle, the grants are part of a statewide initiative established by the 82nd Texas Legislature in 2011. The program provides funding to support partnerships between hospitals and graduate medical education programs that increase the number of emergency medicine and trauma care physician residents and fellows.
More than $630,000 in grant funding will support the training of an emergency medicine resident and fellow in the Department of Emergency Medicine. The awards continue a long-standing record of support for the department, which has received continuous funding through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board since 2012.
“We are honored that Texas has once again entrusted our department with an ETEP grant for the 2026-28 funding cycle,” said Samuel Luber, MD, MPH, professor, chair, and Nancy, Clive and Pierce Runnels Distinguished Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine. “This continued investment reflects the dedication of our faculty and staff to advancing emergency care education and strengthening the healthcare workforce. We look forward to building on our successes and expanding opportunities to train the next generation of emergency medicine professionals.”
The Emergency and Trauma Care Education Partnership Program also supports partnerships between hospitals and graduate professional nursing programs to provide educational experiences in emergency and trauma care for registered nurses pursuing a graduate degree or certificate.
Through the funding, the Emergency Nurse Practitioner Education Partnership at Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston has also received a $400,000 grant. The program has been consistently funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board since 2010.
To date, nearly $20 million in grants have been awarded to 635 graduate medical education positions, and nearly $7 million has been awarded to 652 graduate nursing positions.
