Professor Harold A. Henson, RDH, PhD, of UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry has been recognized by the American Dental Association’s Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations for his outstanding service and contributions in the development of the Dental Hygiene Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination.

The DHLOSCE™ was created to address the need for a valid and reliable examination that accurately assesses the clinical judgment and skills required for the safe, competent practice of entry-level dental hygiene. The exam aims to provide a standardized assessment tool that ensures consistency and fairness in the licensure process while also addressing ethical concerns related to using live patients in clinical examinations.

From 2021 to 2024, Henson participated in the DHLOSCE™ Steering Committee. His efforts helped shape the examination, incorporating innovative approaches and ensuring the examination’s content was relevant and comprehensive.

At the School of Dentistry, Henson serves as the interim director of the Dental Hygiene Program and director of the Center for Teaching and Learning. He joined the dental school in 1998 and became a full-time faculty member in 2003.

Henson earned his certificate in dental hygiene from UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry. He completed a Master of Education in allied health education and administration from the University of Houston and Baylor College of Medicine and a PhD in educational human resource development specializing in adult education from Texas A&M University.
