Memorial Hermann-TMC ranks No. 4 among academic medical centers

Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, the primary teaching hospital for McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, has been ranked No. 4 in the nation among comprehensive academic medical centers for quality and accountability.
The 2026 Vizient Quality and Accountability Study compared Memorial Hermann-TMC with 121 other comprehensive academic medical centers across the country.
The annual study evaluates hospitals across several measures of patient care, including mortality, safety, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness, and variation in care. The 2026 results are based on care delivered from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.
McGovern Medical School faculty, residents, and other providers are integral to that care, working alongside Memorial Hermann-TMC teams while training future physicians and advancing research to improve patient care.
“This recognition reflects the strength of the partnership between UTHealth Houston and Memorial Hermann and, most importantly, the extraordinary people who make that partnership successful,” said LaTanya J. Love, MD, dean of McGovern Medical School. “Our faculty bring their expertise to the bedside every day while also educating the next generation of physicians and advancing discoveries that can improve patient care. We are incredibly proud to see that commitment to excellence reflected in this national recognition.”
Bela Patel, MD, vice dean for healthcare quality and professor of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at McGovern Medical School, credited the faculty, residents, providers, and teams whose work contributed to the recognition.

The recognition continues a sustained record of performance for Memorial Hermann-TMC, which has finished in the top 10% of its Vizient cohort in 11 of the past 13 years.
“Even more remarkable is the consistency behind this achievement,” Patel said. “It is a testament to our culture of continuous improvement, teamwork, and commitment to excellence. This recognition belongs to everyone who shows up each day determined to make care safer, better, and more effective for our patients.”

The Vizient Quality and Accountability Study has been conducted annually since 2005 and is designed to help hospitals assess their performance against similar institutions. Vizient draws on clinical and patient experience data to evaluate performance and identify practices associated with quality and safety.
Two additional Memorial Hermann hospitals were recognized in their respective Vizient cohorts. Memorial Hermann Pearland Hospital ranked No. 14 among complex care medical centers, while Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center ranked No. 19 among large, specialized complex care medical centers.
