4 GSBS students awarded UTHealth CPRIT fellowships

The UTHealth Innovation in Cancer Prevention Research Training Program funded by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) has announced the 2021-2022 fellows and GSBS students Joseph DeCunha, Taylor Halsey, Ruoyu Wang, and Mikayla Waters were among the recipients.

Transgender men face significant health and social disparities, including barriers to health care, research, and essential HIV-related conversations with their health care providers. That is why Paige Wermuth, PhD, MPH, assistant professor in the Department of Management, Policy, and Community Health, and graduate student Lou Weaver of The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth Houston) School of Public Health are launching a pilot project to examine and develop communication materials for trans men and their health care providers regarding HIV prevention.

The HEED Award is the only national honor recognizing U.S. medical, dental, pharmacy, osteopathic, nursing, veterinary, allied health, and other health school and centers that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion across their campuses. The 51 honorees will be featured in the December 2021 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
