Associate Professor Chun-Teh Lee, DDS, DMSc, MS, of the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene, has been named the director of pre-/post-doctoral research at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, effective June 1.

Lee, who replaces Dharini van der Hoeven, MSc, PhD, will oversee research-related activities of pre-/post-doctoral trainees while serving as a liaison between residents, program directors, and the Office of Research. He will develop training modules in research design and methodology and ensure compliance with research-related policies.

Lee joined the dental school faculty in 2015, and he has served as the director of research for the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene since 2020.

His laboratory focuses on understanding the resolution of inflammation mediated by specialized pro-resolving mediators in periodontitis. Lee is also active in studying periodontal disease diagnosis, periodontal disease risk assessment, novel therapy in periodontology and implantology, precision dentistry, and evidence-based dentistry. He has received several federal, foundation, and industry-sponsored grants.

Lee is a member of several committees in the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), AAP Foundation, and the International and American Associations for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research. In 2017, he was awarded the AAP Teaching Fellowship.

Lee earned his dental degree from the National Taiwan University School of Dentistry in Taipei, Taiwan, in 2007. He received his master’s and periodontics certificate from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine in New York in 2012 and completed his DMSc in oral biology from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston in 2015.
