Abstract

Our Department is one of the top largest Biostatistics PhD programs in the USA. One and last step of PhD training is to do dissertation research. In this talk, I will discuss the following important questions regarding the dissertation research in PhD training:

  • Why is the dissertation necessary for PhD training?
  • What: How to select a dissertation topic?
  • Who to work with: How to select a dissertation chair/supervisor?
  • What are the key skills required for statistical and data science methodology research?
  • What are the key skills required for biomedical and health science application research?
  • How to perform dissertation research?
  • When: Timelines for PhD dissertation
  • I will share my experiences and lessons learned in directing our PhD students from the past years.
