How do you know if your students have learned what you set out to teach? Assessment is crucial to understanding the effectiveness of our instruction. Ensuring our assessment aligns with our aimed learning objectives is a foundational component of effective teaching. This presentation will provide attendees with the opportunity to review and write effective learning objectives. In addition, various assessment methods will be discussed with helpful ideas on how to ensure that you are choosing the best approach aligned with your objectives.

Presenter’s Bio:

Abbey Bachmann, PhD, MEd, serves as an Assistant Professor/Educational Programs Associate in the Office of Educational Programs with a joint appointment in Graduate Medical Education(GME)/Office of Professionalism at McGovern Medical School. She received her PhD in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Houston. Her professional experience also includes teaching secondary and post-secondary English education courses for over 12 years as well as conducting various research and educational scholarship around best practices for creating motivational and equitable learning environments.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between goals and objectives.
  • Write learning objectives at various levels.
  • Select appropriate assessment methods in alignment with objectives.

 

This presentation help demonstrate compliance with CODA Standards for faculty development in:

  • Dental Education Programs – Standard 3-2
  • Dental Hygiene Education Programs – Standard 3-8
