Addressing Two Largely Unexamined Global Maternal and Infant Health Issues through Family-Based Care in Malawi

Event Description

Progress towards Sustainable Maternal & Child Health Goals in low-income countries is generally measured by reduced maternal and child mortality. However, this overlooks the broader impacts of maternal health on infant survival and quality of life. In Malawi, annually, over 19,000 infants at high risk require targeted care to survive their first year. Moreover, women suffering from prolonged illness post "near-miss" deliveries far outnumber those who die in childbirth, yet they lack post-discharge care, affecting their long-term health. This webinar discusses these critical issues, and a care model developed in Malawi to address them. Speaker: Joanne Jorissen Chiwaula, MSc, CNM Founder & Director of African Mothers Health Initiative and Chimwemwe mu’bereki Association
