Dental procedures frequently require an understanding of the current, evidence-based role of drugs in overall patient management, particularly with regard to medically compromised patients. This seminar is designed to familiarize dental professionals with current issues in the use of drug therapy, with an emphasis on scientific guidance. Pharmacotherapy-focused updates and reviews will also be discussed during this course.
Dental Practitioners: This is the last opportunity to meet the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE) requirements for RULE §111.1 for prescribing controlled substances and dangerous drugs at UTSD. Dental professionals with DEA numbers MUST have completed the 2 hour requirement by September 1st.
This course is designed to satisfy TSBDE requirements for RULE §111.1 . Recent changes in TSBDE Rules and Regulations require that dental practitioners be able to access the Texas Prescription Monitoring Program to prevent misuse of controlled substances. This course will also discuss strategies for observing applicable rules and regulations pertaining to the prescription, administration, and disposal of controlled substances in dental practice, in order to offer patients safe and effective pharmacotherapy. We will also discuss the recognition and prevention of drug abuse and diversion in dental patients and dental practice.
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
- Understand how to obtain and use official prescription forms for controlled substances
- Comply with the Texas Prescription Monitoring Program and use the controlled substance database appropriately
- Recognize and prevent the abuse of controlled substances in dentistry
- Select opioid and non-opioid analgesics for the effective and safe management of acute post-operative dental pain
