The University of Texas Police at Houston (UT Police) is scheduled for a virtual site-based assessment as part of a program to achieve reaccreditation by verifying the department meets professional standards. Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), the accreditation process requires UT Police to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.
UT Police employees have already started taking part in a roll call training regimen focused on CALEA and the accreditation process through PowerDMS. In addition, UT Police will distribute informational pieces via email, to include CALEA facts and CALEA standards.
As part of the assessment, UT Police employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments in one of the following ways:
UT Police employees and the public are invited to offer comments by calling 713-563-2145 on Tuesday, Dec. 1, from 8 to 10 a.m. Comments will be taken by the CALEA Assessment Team.
Public Information Session
UT Police employees and the public also are invited to attend a virtual public information session starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The session will be conducted virtually through Zoom.
The call-in number is +1 877 853 5257, Zoom Meeting ID 862 1124 0236, Password 730311.
Anyone wishing to submit written comments about UT Police’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Telephone comments, as well as comments at the public information session, are limited to 10 minutes and must address UT Police’s ability to comply with CALEA standards. Copies of specific standards are available at UT Police or by contacting Sgt. Everton Long, accreditation manager, at email@example.com.
Currently, CALEA grants accreditation statuses in four-year periods, requiring UT Police to submit annual reports attesting to the agency’s continued compliance with standards.
