Presentation Description:

This presentation will cover how to choose a journal to submit your paper to, the parts of a scientific paper, and how to efficiently write papers.

 

Learning Objectives:

After the presentation, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe how to choose the best journal to submit your paper to.
  2. Name the parts of a paper.
  3. Describe the content of each section of a paper and how to write it.
  4. Define what is meant by “writing clearly” in scientific writing.

 

Presenter’s Bio:

Dr. Goode has a PhD in Human Molecular Genetics and performed research before becoming a scientific editor in the Department of Scientific Publications at UT MDACC in 1989.  There she served as Managing Editor for the journal Molecular Carcinogenesis and an author’s editor for UT MDACC authors writing journal manuscripts and grant proposals.  She became the Education Director for Scientific Publications in 2000 and, with a panel of editors from scientific publications, developed a standardized program for teaching scientists how to write manuscripts for submission to journals.  She has edited or written parts of more than 300 grant proposals, ranging from small grants for students to NIH R01s and P01s to NIH SPOREs, the UT MDACC Cancer Center Support Grant, and the CTSA.  She is a board-certified Editor in the Life Sciences.  In 2003, she became Project Manager for Translational Research in the UT MDACC Office of the Vice President for Translational Research, where she advised faculty and trainees on finding grant funding and writing grant proposals and identified large grant programs for UT MDACC.  With Razelle Kurzrock, MD, who became co-PI of the CCTS, Dr. Goode wrote the UT MDACC portions of the CTSA application.  In October, 2006, shortly before the CTSA was funded, she became the CCTS Administrative Director.  In addition to her administrative responsibilities, she continues to teach scientific writing and assist investigators finding funding opportunities and writing grant proposals.
