Presenter: Stacia DeSantis, Ph.D.

Title: Responding to a Novel Pandemic: Introducing an Antibody Surveillance System: Part 2

Abstract:

In response to the SARS-COV-2 pandemic, the Texas Department of State Health Services contracted UTSPH to develop and deploy a statewide surveillance system for SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence, or the presence of antibodies against the virus that causes COVID-19. In August of 2020, the Texas Coronavirus Antibody Response Survey (CARES) was born. This “Part II” talk will cover the progression of Texas CARES over 3 years of the pandemic, to today, Sept 2023. We will demonstrate how the scope of the survey changed from estimating seroprevalence from natural antibodies to examining seroprevalence to vaccine-induced antibodies, quantifying breakthrough infections in those fully vaccinated, and capturing via survey as well as analyzing those reporting long COVID symptoms. We will end with a discussion of lessons learned, and how our and other published data reflect the importance of future research on and surveillance of long COVID and post COVID conditions.
