Student Achievement

The CSON evaluates success with respect to student achievement through pass rates on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) licensure exam and advanced practice (APRN) certification exams, as well as completion rates and job placement rates. These three program outcomes are mandated for CCNE accreditation. Thresholds of acceptability are set by CCNE as an 80 percent pass rate for first time takers on licensing and certification exams. Completion rates and job placement rates by one year post graduation are set at 70 percent.  Achievement goals are based on realistic goals for achievement of each outcome.  For example, while a 100% NCLEX pass rate would be desirable, in a large nursing program it is not realistic. However, we wanted a goal significantly higher than the national and state average and chose 95%. The same goal is used for certification exams.  Table 8.1.p, Table 8.1.q, and Table 8.1.r demonstrate positive results during recent years on both the NCLEX-RN licensure exam and advanced practice certification exams.

The B.S.N. to D.N.P. Nurse Anesthesia program admitted its first class in May of 2014. Graduates were eligible to take the certification examination May of 2017.

Employment - The employment information is collected at the time of exit from the program as part of clearance for graduation/completion and again in the one year alumni survey. The achievement goal for employment in all programs is 90%. The B.S.N. program employment rates exceed the CCNE required rate of 70 percent or higher (threshold of acceptability). The B.S.N. rates include both students completing the generic and R.N.-B.S.N. tracks within the program. The M.S.N. employment rates within 12 months of program completion also exceeded the required threshold. The employment rate for nurse anesthetists (NA) prepared at the D.N.P. level and the Ph.D. program graduates have remained at 100 percent within six months of graduation. The D.N.P. levels have remained at or above 95%.

Completion Rates - Program completion rates for the B.S.N. program are calculated as 150 percent time (six semesters for generic students and five semesters for R.N.-B.S.N. students). The B.S.N. completion rates in Table 4.1.s include both generic and R.N.-B.S.N. students combined. Rates for the M.S.N. program are calculated based on completion within five years from the time entering the program. Rates for the D.N.P. program are based on completion in 5 years and completion rates for the Ph.D. program are based on completion in 7 years. The completion rates for each program are listed in Table 8.1.s and exceed the required 70 percent threshold rate except for the Ph.D. program. The goal for each program is a 90% completion rate.   IPEDS data on completion rates are not used for program evaluation because the data are too old to be actionable.  With a 15 month B.S.N. program and three graduating cohorts a year, multiple cohorts have graduated before IPEDS data are available.  Both the D.N.P. and Ph.D. programs have issues with graduation rates.  The number of students in each program is small and affected by the life circumstances of nurses who are already in leadership positions.  For example, a student in a major leadership position in a large hospital may start the program and then the hospital lets him/her go.  Often the student will drop out of school for financial reasons or family reasons.  The School maintains a record of why all doctoral students drop out.

B.S.N. and M.S.N. graduation rates by race and gender are provided.  However, the D.N.P. and Ph.D. program rates could not be reported because of small numbers in each group.
