Postdoctoral Fellow

Texas Institute for Restorative Neurotechnologies

Dr. Chandan Kumar Behera received his PhD in Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience from University of Ulster UK . Before that he did his M.Des (Intelligent Systems Design) from IIT Kanpur, India and B.Tech in Electronics and Telecommunication Engg. from BPUT, India. Prior to joining UTHealth as a postdoctoral fellow, he worked as Postdoctoral Associate at Yale University, USA and Postdoctoral Research Associate at University of Ulster, UK. In his current role he tries to decipher the principles of learning and memory, based on his research experience and academic background. (https://www.linkedin.com/in/chandan-behera-ab28815a)

Research

Oscillons are novel structures in the brain rhythms, that are believed to counteract of the widespread limitations of conventional analyses of the LFP decomposition, potentially leading to a skewed perception of the signal's nature. But the connections between oscillons and neuronal spiking, which is crucial for understanding learning and memory mechanisms in not explored so far. At UTHealth,Dr. Behera, based on his previous experience in systems neuroscience research, works towards understanding the spike-oscillon coupling, which is a novel, unexplored field of research, funded by NIH.
