Undergraduate Summer Internship Program

The UTHealth Biomedical Informatics, Genomics and Translational Cancer Research Training Program (BIG-TCR) is focused on training next-generation researchers and leaders in the field of cancer research. It aims to provide interns the opportunity to gain invaluable hands-on research experience through a 10-week training program. UTHealth Houston is now recruiting up to six outstanding undergraduate students across the nation who are interested in genomics and informatics to participate in a summer internship opportunity. The program is a 10-week internship focusing on research training in the field of biomedical informatics, genomics, and translational cancer research (BIG-TCR) under the supervision of UTHealth faculty. 

Application Requirements

  • Eligibility

    • Candidates must be currently enrolled undergraduate students from the US. 

    • International students who hold a valid visa throughout the duration of the program are eligible to apply. 

    • Candidates should be majoring in a field related to quantitative or biological sciences, including but not limited to (bio)chemistry, physics, statistics, mathematics, computer science, and bioengineering. 
    • Candidates must be available to live and work in Texas during the internship to meet the stipend requirements. Interns who are unable to work in Texas will be ineligible to receive the stipend.
  • Program Benefits

    • A $6,000 stipend will be provided to cover housing, travel, and living expenses. 
    • Participation in a highly interactive and innovative training environment in the field of cancer research.

Summer Internship Guidelines

Applicants who have passed the pre-screening process will be notified of the next step in the application. The BIG-TCR team will coordinate the interviews between candidates and summer internship mentors from UTHealth Houston. The Internship will take place from June 3, 2026, to August 12, 2026 (Tentative). All accepted candidates are expected to attend the entire 10-week training program. Should accepted candidates be unable to attend the program, they must inform the BIG-TCR team as soon as possible. Depending on the form of the internship, the trainees will be expected to be present at UTHealth in Houston for registration and the annual retreat. During the internship, the mentor and intern’s lab members will be responsible for the project design and supervision of trainee’s progress.

Visiting Scholars must comply with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations and all policies and procedures of the university, including, but not limited to all policies contained in the Handbook of Operating Procedures. The privileges of all Visiting Scholars at the university are at the pleasure of the university. The university may, at any time, and in its sole discretion, end a Visiting Scholar’s’ relationship with the university.
