Resources for New Canvas Instructors

As you know, UTHealth is implementing Canvas as a replacement for Blackboard for all SPH courses: face-to-face, hybrid, online and continuing education.  You are invited to explore the resources below in preparation for your migration to Canvas.  Questions? Contact [email protected].

Getting Started

  • SPH Course Migration Request
Migration support is in place to help move your Blackboard course material into Canvas. Complete this form to request assistance. You will be enrolled in the Orientation for New Canvas Instructors and receive a development sandbox to experiment with.

  • Orientation for New Canvas Instructors
This self-paced course is designed to familiarize instructors with the basic need-to-know tools and features of Canvas in an effort to prepare them for course design and delivery.

This course is broken into 5 modules (total of 19 individual very short lessons). Each module should take about 30-45 minutes to read, review and complete. It is recommended that participants complete the modules in sequential order; however, it is not required.

Training Videos & How-To Guides

  • Canvas Instructor Videos
The Canvas Instructor Video Guide contains a series of short videos designed to help instructors learn how to use Canvas. Videos can be viewed in any order. Total viewing time for all videos is ~ 55 minutes.

  • Canvas Instructor Guide
The Canvas Instructor Guide is a comprehensive selection of how-to articles provided by Instructure. All articles are ordered by topic with a robust search function included at the top of the page.

  • Canvas Designer Guide
The Canvas Designer Guide is a growing collection of best practices in Canvas course design.  It contains a number of course design resources including sample courses and links to Canvas orientation courses shared by other universities.

  • UT Austin's Canvas Training Center
UT Austin has put together a really great Canvas Training center course and made it publicly available. Their tutorials and FAQs have a lot of useful information for new Canvas users.
