LaTanya Jones Love, MD, serves as executive vice president of student affairs at UTHealth Houston. In this role, she coordinates with members of the executive and leadership councils, including deans from each school, to develop and oversee strategic initiatives, accountability systems, and partnerships that promote a diverse and inclusive climate for the university. She also serves as the lead advocate for the student population, creating and leading programs that enrich the student life experience and promote well-being. In addition, she focuses efforts on leadership development programs, faculty retention efforts, and overall success of the strategic initiatives in each of these areas.
Love, who previously served as vice president for diversity and leadership development, continues to partner with stakeholders to highlight the university’s diversity and ensure that UTHealth Houston maintains an inclusive environment. This includes working with each of the six schools to expand educational and leadership training opportunities, recruit and retain a diverse workforce and student body, and develop a multidimensional student well-being and resilience program.
Love was named dean of education at McGovern Medical School in September 2022, after serving in the role ad interim for two years. She enjoys engaging with students during all touchpoints of their medical education and leads initiatives across the continuum of medical education. Love is double board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics and is active in teaching medical student and resident trainees. She has received numerous teaching and service awards. Her academic interests include medical student well-being; she has developed a curriculum on medical student wellness and resilience and has written a book chapter on this topic. She has also developed a curriculum on unconscious bias in health care and has been a nationally invited lecturer on this topic.
Love received her undergraduate degree from Howard University and her medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She completed her residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at UTHealth Houston in 2004, and a chief residency in 2005. She was recruited to the faculty as an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at McGovern Medical School and, shortly after, joined the leadership team in Admissions and Students Affairs at the medical school. Love was the inaugural associate dean of diversity and inclusion at McGovern Medical School. Her previous role as medical director of Student Health Services sparked her clinical interest in student well-being and resilience.
