Our Four Pillars

Our aspiration

Future in Focus is the planning process through which we are building a stronger, more deliberate UTHealth Houston, shaped by the voices of our community and guided by a clear vision for where we are headed.

Every conversation, priority, and decision in this planning process is oriented toward this aspiration. It is ambitious by design and achievable because of the strength of this community.

Ambitious by Design.
Achievable by Community.

UTHealth Houston's strategic priorities

The four pillars of our strategic plan reflect who we are and where we are going.

Education

We are preparing the next generation of health leaders at our schools by adapting our curricula to meet the demands of online learning, AI and other advancing technologies, and a rapidly evolving health sciences landscape.

Research

Where can discovery create the greatest long-term impact? We're pursuing bold science that moves from bench to bedside faster, investing in the infrastructure and talent that let breakthroughs scale, and positioning UTHealth Houston among the nation's leading research institutions for decades to come.

Clinical care

Through expansion and operational excellence, we are strengthening the clinical practice and growing our reach across Texas, elevating the patient experience, and deepening collaborations with Memorial Hermann Health System and Harris Health.

Organizational excellence

Our future depends on the people in our classrooms, labs, clinics, and communities — their ideas, their experience, their commitment to the mission. We're investing in that culture and in the tools and systems that support it, so our people are equipped to do their best work, every day.

A plan built to last

The plan we’re building through Future in Focus is a 10-year framework, not a one-time document. Once the plan is published in Spring 2027, it will be put into action with clear priorities, ongoing progress tracking, and regular opportunities for the community to stay informed and engaged.

UTHealth Houston physician reviews orthopedic X-rays with a colleague, pointing to medical images that show repaired fractures and joint implants, highlighting collaboration, diagnostic expertise, and musculoskeletal care.

But we aren’t waiting until 2027 to begin. Through Fast Track Initiatives, UTHealth Houston is already moving on several priority areas identified through early stakeholder engagement: research infrastructure, clinical expansion, operational excellence, and AI and technology infrastructure. These initiatives run in parallel with the planning process and reflect our core belief: What’s next starts now. We will share updates as both the plan and these initiatives take shape, measured not just by what we achieve, but by how we achieve it, together.

This plan belongs to all of us

The UTHealth Houston community will shape the vision and priorities taking shape through Future in Focus. We encourage everyone to stay engaged as this work unfolds. Check this site regularly for updates, and look for opportunities to share your perspective throughout the planning process.
