The In-Person Return of the UCSC Annual Workshop
The In-Person Return of the UCSC Annual Workshop
The University Classified Staff Council (UCSC) hosts an annual workshop each year for classified staff employees from across the institution to connect and learn through professional development. The FY23 workshop is the first in-person workshop since 2019 and was hosted at the Cooley University Life Center on Friday, July 14, 2023. The “Summer Camp” themed event was a huge success.
Some of the fondest summer memories for many are sunny childhood camp experiences. Summer camp offers the chance to socialize, meet new people, and gain decision-making and leadership skills, plus an appreciation for community. All these outcomes —self-identity, leadership, and self-respect — build personal competencies. Ultimately, the FY23 workshop provided attendees the opportunity for open peer-to-peer dialogue, exchanges of ideas and information, and community.
The day kicked off with breakfast and guest speaker, Kevin Dillon, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Dillon spoke on the daily importance and contributions UTHealth Houston makes in the Houston community.
Next, speaker LaShawn Pursley-Huey, DNP, RN, shared her journey to success and the value of mentor and mentee relationships. Dr. Pursley-Huey is also the founder of the Sneakers to Heels Mentor Program.
Lunch was served and attendees were able to connect with UTHealth Houston vendors: EAP Wellness Services, Today’s Business Solutions, UCSC, and UTHealth Houston Health Services. While attendees finished lunch, Dr. Robert Emery, Vice President Safety, Health, Environment and Risk Management, also known as “Safety Bob”, presented the educational awards.
Following the educational awards, UTHealth Houston IT team, including Richard Anselme, Elias Rivera, Alexander Nartey, and Ryan Awar, spoke on cyber security followed by an engaging Q&A session. HR recruiter, Brett Cullum, was the final speaker in the series and shared insider tips and tricks for interviewing and making a favorable first impression.
The day concluded with the presentation of The Spotlight Award. The Spotlight Award is given annually to one classified employee from each school who embodies the mission, vison, and values of UTHealth Houston-excellence, innovation, and integrity. These employees demonstrate exceptional work performance including caring, commitment, integrity, and knowledge.
Staff Recognition looks forward to hosting this premier event again next year on July 19, 2024.
