Dr. Sean I. Savitz, Director of the Institute for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases, delved into the integration of mobile health technology for stroke care during an interview at the 2023 World Stroke Congress in Toronto, Canada.

Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and video capture features, Dr. Savitz explains how remote assessments can be conducted to visually identify impairments and provide automated feedback to patients. Preliminary data using an automated method to evaluate the shortened Fugl-Meyer Assessment reveals the impressive ability of deep learning algorithms to recognize and automatically score upper extremity motor impairments, achieving an average accuracy of approximately 80%. This underscores the promising potential of this technology in addressing the accessibility challenges of outpatient rehabilitation for post-stroke patients.
