Advancing Stroke Care Through Collaboration

Founded in September 2016, the Institute for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases was created to address the full continuum of stroke care through collaboration across six UTHealth Houston schools. Today, it is home to more than 100 professionals working to advance stroke prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, education, and research.

Innovation in Stroke Care

Over the past decade, the Institute has advanced rigorous research, developed innovative care models, and expanded public stroke education. Teams are pioneering AI-enabled telerehabilitation tools, advancing Brain Health MRI methods, and leading national clinical trial enrollment through the StrokeNet Regional Coordinating Center.

Education & Training

Education and training remain central to the Institute’s mission. Through accredited continuing education courses, expert-led symposia, monthly seminars, and two active journal clubs, the Institute equips clinicians, trainees, and researchers with cutting-edge knowledge in stroke care.

Global Health Initiatives

The Institute’s impact extends across the globe, from stroke awareness initiatives in El Salvador and the Philippines to culturally adapted telerehabilitation programs in Nepal and Vietnamese-language stroke recognition tools in the United States.

Stories of Impact

The People Behind Our Progress

Our work is made meaningful by the patients, families, researchers, and trainees who drive progress in stroke care. Their stories reflect the real-world impact of our research, education, and community partnerships.

  • Derrick and Kendra jefferson with family

When Derrick suffered his stroke, we feared we had lost the man we knew and loved. Through the research studies with Emily and her incredible team, Derrick has not only regained his physical strength but has reclaimed his dignity, confidence, and his life. We have our husband, our friend, and our dad back — and that is nothing short of a miracle. We are forever grateful for the compassionate, life-changing work being done through this research.

I really like the SUPER study. I really like intensive. I really practiced the stimulation and PT!

About the SUPER Study

The SUPER study is a clinical trial addressing arm weakness after a stroke. Participants are involved in an intensive 3-week therapy program and have multiple assessments over a 6 month timeframe. We are grateful to all the participants who contributed to this important research.

Education and Collaboration

Building Knowledge for Better Stroke Care

From our annual Yatsu Day Symposium to ongoing research and training, the Institute brings together clinicians, researchers, and trainees to share ideas, discover new approaches, and improve lives after stroke.

Growing. Advancing. Thriving.

After ten years, the Institute continues to build on a shared commitment to innovation, collaboration, education, and community impact.
