Our Research
The Center for Hepatobiliary and Gastrointestinal Research (CHGR) is a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to advancing knowledge and therapies of acute and chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and the hepatobiliary system. The CHGR focuses on understanding the molecular underpinnings of the diseases and identifying novel therapeutic targets to improve outcomes of patients requiring major surgery or critical care medicine. The CHGR is one of several organ-focused research centers within the Institute of Perioperative Medicine at UTHealth Houston.
Vision
The CHGR aspires to become a national leader of hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal research, focusing on understanding the pathophysicology of diseases and making transformative discoveries to improve treatments and patients’ outcomes.
Mission
The CHGR will promote groundbreaking research focused on elucidating the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, acute liver injury, chronic liver inflammation caused by metabolic dysfunction and/or heavy alcohol use, and hepatocellular carcinoma. We will strive to advance mechanistic findings toward therapeutic development through stimulating collaborations and providing necessary resources.
