Our Research
The Center for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (“CPCM”) is a multi-disciplinary research center focused on studying the molecular mechanisms and immunologic responses during acute disease states of the lungs, heart, and kidneys. The CPCM aims to understand basic disease mechanisms and identify novel therapeutic interventions to improve the morbidity and mortality of patients requiring major surgery or critical care medicine. The CPCM is one of several multi-disciplinary, organ-focused research centers within the Institute of Perioperative Medicine at UTHealth Houston.
Vision
The CPCM aspires to be the leader of lung and critical care research within the Texas Medical Center in Houston, in the State of Texas, and to lead innovative and therapy-targeted research in critical care medicine nationally and internationally, including scientific discovery, research training, and transformation of perioperative critical medicine.
Mission
Promote groundbreaking research focused on understanding the underlying disease mechanisms and immunology of acute lung diseases, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and pneumonia, in addition to sepsis, myocardial injury (MI), and acute kidney injury (AKI). We focus on mechanistic findings that can be employed therapeutically and have the potential to stimulate randomized clinical trials in patients experiencing critical illness. In this regard, we collaborate closely with the Center for Outcomes Research of the Institute of Perioperative Medicine (Director Dr. Turan, senior center member Dr. Sessler) to conduct randomized clinical trials testing novel interventions.
