With the growing AI force, there is a need to bridge large public health datasets, basic science findings, and clinical research and practice to improve patient care and perioperative outcomes. This Center will leverage data science, informatics, and AI to achieve excellence in perioperative medical research by integrating a team of experts in AI, basic, translational, and clinical research.
Our center aims to become a national leader in AI perioperative medicine research, focusing on understanding the mechanism and developing preventative/treatment strategies for perioperative disease.
Our center will leverage data science, informatics, and artificial intelligence to achieve excellence in perioperative medical research by integrating a team of experts in AI, basic, translational, and clinical research. We aim to develop and apply AI methods and tools to advance health care delivery, biomedical discovery, and public and population health.
Our Research
Over 200 million major surgeries are performed annually, and it is estimated that 1–4% of these patients will die perioperatively. Perioperative death is considered the third leading cause of death in the USA, following heart disease and cancer. Acute perioperative organ injury causing single- or multiple-organ failure is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in surgical patients. Little is known why a patient develops perioperative organ injury, what are the risk factors, underlying mechanism, preventive or treatment strategies. With the ever-growing AI force, there is a need to bridge the large public health data, basic science findings, clinical research and practice, to improve patient care and perioperative outcome. The Center for Perioperative Artificial Intelligence Research (PAIR) is therefore developed to leverage the growing sophistication of AI technology to bring tangible improvements to the medical field, particularly in perioperative medicine. The center is jointly led by the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine at McGovern Medical School and the Department of Health Data Science and AI at the D. Bradley McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics.
